Symposium 27
After an unavoidable one-year postponement due the covid pandemic, the MGSA was pleased to convene its 27th biennial Symposium at York University in Toronto, on October 13-16, 2022. Professor Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair at York, hosted the event and chaired the Local Arrangements Committee.
The Symposium is organized by Modern Greek Studies Association Executive Board, the Program Committee led by Elsa Amanatidou and Neovi Karakatsanis, and the Local Arrangements Committee. The MGSA and its cosponsors was pleased to be able to extend financial support to 36 speakers from north America and beyond.
The conference program featured 20 academic panels; 4 special sessions; a keynote event; and a mixer for graduate students in our field; and a concert performance by Kuné Canada’s Global Orchestra. At the conference venue, the organizers hosted a book exhibit.
The keynote event featured Professors Christina Koulouri (Professor of Modern & Contemporary History & Rector, Panteion University of Social and Historical Studies, Athens). Her lecture was titled “Greek Centennials: Commemorating Victories and Defeats.”
At the end of the academic meetings, attendees also had the opportunity to take a complimentary tour of Toronto’s Greektown before proceeding to numerous Greek restaurants and music venues.
