Symposium 24·Atlanta, GA

The 24th biennial Symposium of the MGSA, held in Atlanta on Oct. 15-18, 2015, featured some 80 scheduled presentations and attracted more than 130 attendees. Louis A. Ruprecht, Jr., Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee, welcomed the gathering with unequaled Southern hospitality. Sakis Gekas, Program Committee Chair, and his colleagues presented a high-quality program with an exceptionally wide variety of topics: language; literature; material and visual culture; engagement with Byzantium, the Classical tradition, and oral history; subjects with Ottoman and Slavic comparanda; etc. Particularly impressive was the enthusiastic participation of a highly qualified younger generation. Yannis Hamilakis' thought-provoking keynote address, "The Archaeo-Politics of a Crisis", attracted an even larger numbers of attendees. Roland Moore worked quietly behind the scenes to capture the event in pictures.
